British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
