Entire Career of Salary Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Join Wealthiest 10%, Report Finds

Per new research, the average earner in the UK would have to work over five decades of salary to achieve the net worth of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Widening Financial Divide Through the Years

The analysis examined net worth statistics including the recent health crisis years and determined that during the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years of median full-time earnings to reach the wealthiest decile of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist involved with the analysis observed: "Economic disparities in Britain are now so large that a average worker accumulating their complete salary throughout their career would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Measuring the Economic Gap

The study discovered that the disparity between the assets of the average person and someone in the richest segment was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by 2020-22.

The economist further stated: "These differences are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is low – those who commence life well-off tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the financial disparity widening in actual numbers, the portion of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – called "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," according to the analysis.

Throughout these years, total wealth in the UK surged from three times the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Drivers of Economic Disparity

Referred to as "passive" increases, via increasing property values and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, as stated in the report.

These appreciations generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the study demonstrates – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Generational Wealth Disparities

The typical financial disparity between people in their early 30s and sixty-somethings more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Area-Based Differences

There were also stark area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in the pandemic period standing at £290k in south-east England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, versus £110k in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Impact

Throughout the COVID period, when millions of workers were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns limited opportunities for spending, the data shows numerous families were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, though. "The average household in the bottom income bracket saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. In contrast, the typical family in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the study reveals.
